Lucille Frances Ryan was born on March 29, 1968 in Auckland, New Zealand. Her mother was a teacher , and her father worked as banker before becoming the mayor of the city. She has five siblings , and is next to youngest in the lineage. Lawless describes her family as Irish Catholic, and she is grateful to her mother's participation in the community for her source of inspiration. Lawless was a performer from the beginning and appeared in her first musical at the age of 10. She continued to take acting classes during high school. She attended Marist College upon her graduation after which she transferred to Auckland University to finish her study of languages. Lawless was 21 when she was crowned Miss New Zealand 1989.
